Environmentally Friendly and Sustainable Terrazzo Tile

Environmentally Friendly and Sustainable Terrazzo Tile

Amid the push for environmentally friendly and sustainable building materials is a product that can not only use recycled materials, but also cut down on energy consumption and CO2 emissions. That product is terrazzo tile.

While we know that the ceramic tile market is growing, there is also a big push in the construction realm for environmentally friendly and sustainable products and building materials. As far as tile is concerned, terrazzo tile can be a better option both environmentally and sustainably.

The environmental impact of the construction industry.

The construction industry accounts for a 36% of worldwide energy usage, and 40% of CO2 emissions. Furthermore, the construction industry sector is responsible for about 35% of waste in landfills across the globe. Given this information, we need to look to take corrective action.

Lucky for us, the terrazzo market is expected to grow between now and 2025. The market was valued at just over $21 million in 2017 and is projected to reach almost $32 million by 2025. Compound annual growth rate, or CAGR, is expected to be at 4.9%. With a new push and focus on environmentally friendly and sustainable ingredients, this growth may be the change that we all need.

Why terrazzo is environmentally friendly and sustainable.

One way that contractors and architects can look to be more sustainable is to use eco-friendly terrazzo tile for their flooring installations. While terrazzo flooring may be 43% costlier than conventional tiles, its energy consumption and carbon footprint are significantly less. In fact, terrazzo tiles use 52% less embodied energy and have 63% less carbon footprint than conventional tiles.

Typically, terrazzo tiles are made of marble, quartz, granite, glass or other suitable chips; sprinkled or unsprinkled, and poured with a binder that is cementitious, chemical or a combination of both. Depending on the type of installation there are both single and double layer tiles available. There is also the option of using glass in the terrazzo, which adds aesthetic to it for use in a wider range of interior applications.
